On International World Peace Day, September 21, students at Mueller Elementary School placed over 630 pinwheels on display at their school. The display is a public statement about the school’s commitment to being a place where acts of hatred are not acceptable.

Ms. Sharon Firestone, principal of Mueller, stated, “In a world where violence has become commonplace and accepted by many as a part of life, we remind students every day that we work cooperatively so that all persons are respected and honored for being unique. In a peaceful environment, students are happier and more successful.“

Guidance counselor Ms. DeeDee Murphy noted, “Seeing the pinwheels lining our driveway is a visual reminder for our students and persons who visit our campus that peace is not just an international issue. We believe that building a peaceful atmosphere at school is necessary for our students to feel safe.”

Because Mueller Elementary School is seeking to become a No Place for Hate campus, the pinwheels for peace project sill be one of its activities for gaining that recognition from the Anti-Defamation League.

Mueller Elementary School opened on August 24. Funds for construction of this school were approved by voters in the Klein ISD when they approved the 2008 bond package.
